AB INTRODUCTION: STDs are one of the most common causes for consultation in
Mozambique. Up to one third of these consultations are males with
urethral discharge. The treatment of acute purulent discharge in men had
been established by the National STD Control Programme in 1987 with
Kanamycin 2 g IM, after a study on its therapeutic efficiency. Since
then no further monitoring of its efficiency has been done. It was
therefore decided that an evaluation was in order, as may strains
resistant to Kanamycin are appearing in other countries. OBJECTIVES: A
study protocol was therefore drawn up to assess its in vitro and in vivo
susceptibility to Kanamycin, and in vitro to Kanamycin, penicillin and
spectinomycin. METHODS: Four different cities were selected to
contribute to the evaluation of 800 cultures of gonococci of male
patients with acute, untreated purulent urethritis. A final confirmation
and a first MIC were done at the reference laboratory in Maputo. The MIC
was thereafter confirmed in the laboratory of Antwerp Tropical
Institute. RESULTS: The collection and analysis of samples will be
realized between January and July 1994. The results will be used to
decide wether or not alteration of treatment strategies will be
necessary in the future in Mozambique. A more regular surveillance of
the sensitivity of N. gonorrhoea will thereafter be installed, to assure
sound treatment schedules which remain cost effective and efficient.
